Chablis Grand Cru Bougros

2023 Chablis Bougros Grand Cru | Vinous 92-94

The 2023 Chablis Bougros Grand Cru is aged in regular used barrels, two to three-years old mainly. I find this more enticing than the Blanchots at the moment, with more delineation and mineralité, touches of wilted white flowers and an attractive leesy element. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a little waxy in texture. Hints of almond and even white chocolate are deftly interwoven on the finish. Excellent.

2023 Chablis Grand Cru – Bougros: (92-94)

(from a .46 ha parcel; matured in a mix of 2 to 10-year-old wood). Moderate wood sets off less elegant but beautifully layered aromas that include those of pear liqueur, essence of lemongrass and enough Chablis typicity to be convincing. The caressing but powerful larger-scaled flavors possess excellent density while exhibiting evident muscle on the impressively complex and persistent finish. This is notably less refined than the Preuses and Blanchot, but refinement isn’t why one buys Bougros. (92-94)/2032+

Chablis Grand Cru les Preuses

2022 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru | Vinous 93-95

The 2022 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru is matured entirely in used barrels, the youngest two years old. The nose has a very appealing sense of cohesion, a subtle grilled hazelnut scent coming through with time. The palate is well-balanced with a slightly honeyed entry, citrus peel and orange pith. It fans out impressively towards the finish and feels very persistent in the mouth. This will tangle with the Bougros for supremacy once in bottle. 2026-2045.

2022 Chablis Grand Cru – Les Preuses: (92-94)

(from a .69 ha parcel planted in 1956). A reserved but exceptionally pretty nose somewhat grudgingly offers up its aromas of notably spicier white orchard fruit and cool floral whiffs along with hints of shrimp shell and iodine. There is better volume still if perhaps not quite the same minerality on the strikingly textured and hugely long finish that offers just a bit more complexity. This is excellent and worth considering. (92-94) /2032+

Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot

2023 Chablis Blanchot Grand Cru | Vinous 90-92

The 2023 Chablis Blanchot Grand Cru is matured entirely in tank. Green apple, Anjou pear. A brioche-tinged bouquet gains intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced with slightly lower acidity, a little waxy in texture with good weight on the finish. The 2022 is more complex but this should still give a decade of drinking pleasure.

2023 Chablis Grand Cru – Blanchot: (91-93)

(from a .91 ha parcel; 100% stainless). Here there is enough reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background at present. There is an appealing tension and refinement to the succulent middle weight flavors that are supported by lemon-tinged acidity on the refreshingly dry, youthfully austere and intensely mineral-driven finale. This isn’t especially dense but it’s silky and certainly firm enough to need at least moderate patience. In a word, lovely. (91-93)/2031+

Chablis 1er Cru Vaucoupin

2023 Chablis Vaucoupin 1er Cru | Vinous 88

The 2023 Chablis Vaucoupin was bottled earlier like Les Forêts this year but I find more delineation and tension, touches of flint underlying the citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity. Still it needs a bit more depth and complexity on the finish.

2023 Chablis “Vaucoupin”: 89

(from a .36 ha holding). Smoke-tinged aromas include those of mineral reduction, citrus confit and plenty of petrol character. The sleek, vibrant and delicious flavors are not especially concentrated but they do offer a lovely mid-palate texture that contrasts noticeably with the firm if slightly edgy finale. My sense is that this will smooth out after a few months in bottle and my rating offers the benefit of the doubt. 89/2029+

Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu

2023 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru | Vinous 91-93

The 2023 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru is matured in used barrels. It has a well-defined bouquet with a little more bite and nervosité compared to the Montée de Tonnerre. The palate is well balanced with a crisp line of acidity. The sapid finish lingers in the mouth.

2023 Chablis “Mont de Milieu”: (89-92)

(from a .34 ha parcel; vinified and maturation in 100% stainless). Discreet though perceptible wood sets off the ripe aromas of lemon confit, white flower, iodine and shellfish. The mouthfeel of the medium weight is punchy but seductive while delivering evident power on the clean and nicely dry finale. This also could use better depth so a t least a few years of keeping should be helpful. (89-92)/2030+

Chablis 1er Cru Les Forêts

2023 Chablis Les Forêts 1er Cru | Vinous 87

The 2023 Chablis Les Forêts has already been bottled, a small cuvée of 2000 bottles, it has a light slightly chalky bouquet, perhaps just missing a little complexity. The palate is quiet sweet on the entry with yellow fruit and bitter lemon, though the finish lacks a bit of length. Early drinking.

2023 Chablis “Les Forêts”: 90

(from a .37 ha parcel; 100% stainless). A more reserved nose makes clear that this could be from nowhere else but Chablis with its aromas of mineral reduction, green apple, tidal pool, iodine and a plethora of citrus elements. The rich and quite generously proportioned middle weight flavors possess a bit more volume while retaining good punch that carries over to the equally palate soaking finale that could also use better depth. Note that this should drink well early if desired. 90/2028+

Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux

2023 Chablis Les Butteaux 1er Cru | Vinous 90-92

The 2023 Chablis Les Butteaux 1er Cru matured in 450-liter barrels, has a lovely bouquet with more panache than the Vaillons: orange pith and yellow plum, just a hint of praline in the background. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed entry, though the acidity keeps it in check. Very pure and quite sensual, this is going to be difficult to resist in its youth.

2023 Chablis “Butteaux”: (90-92)

(from a .57 ha holding). Discreet if easily discernible wood surrounds the ripe aromas of pear, apple, seaweed and a hint of brine character. There is excellent volume to the caressing and seductive medium weight flavors that brim with sappy dry extract that helps to buffer the firm and bright acid spine shaping the markedly dry and lingering finale where the only nit is a touch of warmth. This too should amply repay at least a few years of aging. (90-92)/2030+

Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons

2023 Chablis Vaillons 1er Cru | Vinous 87-89

The 2023 Chablis Vaillons 1er Cru has a pretty bouquet, quite floral with yellow plum and a touch of brioche. The palate is fresh and crisp, not the most complex than the Les Forêts with a touch of spice on the finish. Drink over the next 5-6 years.

2023 Chablis “Vaillons”: (90-92)

(from a 2.5 ha holding spread over Vaillons proper, Roncières, Séchet, Châtains and Epinottes). The mildly exotic aromas of ripe orchard, including white and yellow peach, apricot, lychee and passion fruit, are cut with citrus and tidal pool nuances. There is once again fine volume and excellent richness to the delicious medium-bodied flavors that possess a subtle minerality on the bone-dry, youthfully austere and borderline tannic finish. At least a few years of cellaring should be beneficial. (90-92)/2029+

Chablis Montée de Tonnerre

2023 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre | Vinous 89-91

The 2023 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru is sourced from a vineyard that is gradually producing lower yields. It is matured entirely in tank. It has a fragrant bouquet with light apricot and peach skin aromas. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, and a touch of reduction. Peach and touches of pineapple emerge toward the finish. Fine.

2023 Chablis “Montée de Tonnerre”: (90-93)

(from a huge 2.74 ha parcel in Montée de Tonnerre proper and Pied d’Aloup). An elegant and airy nose freely reveals its aromas of lemon-lime, tidal pool and spice-inflected pear and apple scents. The super- sleek, intense and equally attractively textured flavors culminate in a bone-dry, youthfully austere and sneaky long finale. This could use more depth but the potential is clearly present. I would add that this refined effort is quite classy. (90-93)/2030+

Chablis Vieille Vigne Massale

2023 Chablis Vieilles Vignes Massale | Vinous 89-91

The 2023 Chablis Vieilles Vignes Massale is 30% fermented and aged in used barrels. This has a fragrant bouquet that I much prefer to Les Pargues-more delineation and minéralité coming through here. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, good concentration with a touch of sour lemon towards the finish.

2023 Chablis – Sélection Massale Vieilles Vignes: (89-92)

(from Les Pargues, aged in 75% stainless and the rest in wood). An admirably discreet application of wood easily allows the aromas of apple, sea breeze, petrol and citrus confit to be appreciated. The old vines are very much in evidence as there is fine density to the utterly delicious, succulent and palate soaking flavors that possess a highly seductive texture while displaying outstanding length on the bitter lemon and balanced finale. This will need to develop better depth but it’s clearly very promising and also warmly recommended. (89-92)/2028+

Petit Chablis

2023 Petit Chablis | Vinous 85

The 2023 Petit Chablis was harvested early and bottled in May 2024. It offers a light delicious golden, floral tinged bouquet that is nicely defined. The palate is well balanced with pleasing weight a light creamy in texture and slight lower acidity than the previous vintage on the finish. Fine.

(note that in the US market this is labeled as “Sur le Clos”). Ripe and reasonably fresh aromas include those of petrol, white flower and essence of pear with just enough typicity to be interesting. The generous and agreeably textured flavors offer acceptable length but not much complexity, indeed this is a bit simple. To enjoy young. 86/2025+

2023 Chablis | Vinous 85-87

The 2023 Chablis Village comes from younger vines on the Fleys side of Chablis. It has a straightforward green apple and kiwi fruit scented nose. The palate is medium bodied with a fine bead of acidity, slightly leesy on the finish.

2023 Chablis: (88-91)

(mostly from Courgis fruit). Smoky aromas of gun flint, apple, petrol and better overall typicity leads to sleeker and more focused middle weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the sappy, lingering and more complex finale. This is quite good and while there is a touch of rusticity, it’s not enough to really detract from the overall impression. (88-91)/2027+

Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru

2023 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru | Vinous 91-93

The 2023 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru is raised in used barrels. The nose here is much more reticent than the Bougros, demanding coaxing from the glass. Given a few swirls, eventually, it offers quite attractive yellow fruit, beeswax and lanolin scents. The palate is well balanced with a more exotic white peach and apricot. This more-of-a-crowd-pleasing Les Clos doesn’t possess the acidity of the previous vintage, but there is certainly weight and length. It will be one of the earlier-drinking Les Clos.

2023 Chablis Grand Cru – Les Clos: (90-93)

(from a .88 ha parcel; raised in a mix of 2 to 10-year-old wood). Moderate wood frames more prominent floral influence on the aromas of algae, citrus confit and oyster shell. The succulent yet nicely tension-filled broad- shouldered flavors are quite rich and generously proportioned where the wood telegraphed by the nose is picked up by the solidly long and borderline chewy finale that is refreshingly dry. This isn’t what I would describe as a classic Les Clos but it’s impressive in its fashion and should age accordingly yet be approachable young. (90-93)/2031
